Good Dog Camp
Frequently Asked Questions
What kind of training methods are used?
We here at Clever K9s train dogs use only positive training method endorsed by Patricia McConnell, Ian Dunbar and Jean Donaldson. We reward and reinforce the behaviors we like, and re-direct undesirable behaviors. We love to let dogs use their brains so that they basically teaching themselves. We lay a strong foundation for you in our DayTrain sessions, so you’ll be able to easily pick-up where we left off and continue as far as you want to go!
Isn’t it better if I train my own dog?
Of course it’s always best to train your own dog, but training can be quite a huge endeavor, especially if you’re dealing with a very high-energy dog or a dog that already has some issues. We just simply lay a strong foundation of skills, and show you exactly how to continue working on those skills. Since we have trained thousands of dogs and have an in-depth knowledge of dog behavior, your dog will start off on the right paw quickly with a clear understanding of what we want from him. You will be amazed how quickly your dog will become a model citizen!
How often do I need to bring my dog to DayTrain days?
Obviously the more often the better, ideally 2-3 times a week. You will see much faster results the more frequently your dog attends, if your dog only comes 1-2 times a month, progress will happen, but at a slower rate.
What should we do with our dog on days that he is home?
Every time you pick up your dog from a DayTrain day, you will receive a homework sheet. Homework will be geared towards continued reinforcement of what has been worked on during the DayTrain day. This is how we modify the program to fit individual needs, all dogs learn differently and at difference paces, we will custom the homework to meet you and your dog’s needs.
My dog finished camp and is doing great, but I’d like to keep going, what should I do?
After camp is completed you have several choices. You can just keep working on the skills your dog already knows and be happy with that. You can purchase a Training Pass and attend some group skills classes, many people enjoy the wide assortment of classes we offer, it gives them a chance to try out new skills, such as agility, nosework, flyball, Canine Good Citizens or therapy dog work, or continue with one of our general dog manners classes. Many people love the benefits of dog daycare and continue to bring their dog for some intense social playtime! Some people find that they would like an additional private lesson or home consult, we offer those services individually only to camp participants.
What do you guarantee?
We would love to say you will have a perfectly trained, well-mannered dog by the end of camp, but that just wouldn’t be truthful. (Don’t be fooled by what you see on TV!) What we can tell you is that your dog will learn extremely valuable skills during camp and you will see changes every week in your dog if you follow through on homework at home. We will have the same expectations on your dog that we do on our own personal dogs. We expect our dogs to give us their attention when we ask and follow through on trained commands. Our goal is simple, we want every dog to be a lifelong happy family member!
