Dogs With Issues (DWI Dogs)
"If dogs could talk, it would take a lot of the fun out of
owning one."  Andrew A. Rooney
Has your dog ever bitten or attempted to bite?
Here is a standardized scale regarding dog bites:

* Level One: Bark, lunge, no teeth on skin.
* Level Two: Teeth touched, no puncture.
* Level Three: 1-4 holes from a single bite. All holes less than half the   length of a single canine
tooth.
* Level Four: Single bite, deep puncture (up to one and a half times the depth of a single
canine tooth), wound goes black within 24 hours.
* Level Five: Multiple bite attack or multiple attack incidents.
* Level Six: Missing large portions of flesh.

More information on dog bites can also be found at

What if my dog has bitten?  Can he still come to class?
This will need to be discussed, however most dogs that fall into the Level 1 or Level 2 category
can integrate into a class.  The majority of dog bites are VERY preventable, by educating the
owners and learning to read your dog.

What if my dog is overly shy?
Shy dogs absolutely need class training, however there is a systematic approach to helping
these dogs become more comfortable around people/dogs.
Clever K9's has a bandanna program to help out shy dogs.  If your dog needs extra space, he
wears a bandanna to class, letting everyone know that your dog doesn't do well with other
dogs/people charging up to him.

What if my dog just goes NUTS around other dogs/people?
Then you need to get your dog in class!  Dogs that get highly excited need extra socialization
and be taught self-control exercises!

But my dog is so strong I can't hold on to him when he charges!
If you have a dog that is stronger than you, we highly recommend a training device to help
control your dog.  Clever K9's sells a variety of harnesses and head collars to help gain control
of your dog so you can get control while training your dog.

Okay, I want to sign up for class, now what do I do?

Quick lesson on dog stress

Dogs give many indications before biting, you just need to
learn how to read your dog.
This dog is showing obvious signs of high stress:  whites of
the eyes showing, growling, lips pulled back, wrinkled
forehead, ears forward, tight body language.
Guess what - dog bites out in defense.
(Don't worry, this dog actually does this on command.  She
would have made a great Hollywood dog!)
Much happier doggy!  Note relaxed forehead, loose lips, eyes
soft, relaxed body language.
This happened immediately after the attempted bite above,
she was placed on the ground and offered a treat.  Stress
eliminated!
Clever K9's uses counter-conditioning, redirection and
positive associations to help change your dog's behaviors.
These methods takes many repetitions and time, however
the changes will be life-long!
